The other day a student of mine was telling me about a rather “intense” discussion she was having with her significant other about their respective beliefs in god (or lack thereof). She described herself as an agnostic, while her significant other was adamantly atheistic. He was raised in a deeply Christian home and as he matured he came to see that all the claims about creationism and a bearded man in the sky were absurd. From this perspective, along with his increasing knowledge of the natural sciences, he couldn’t see any legitimate reasons for believing in any supernatural god. And he felt it was a “cop out” to say that one does know what one believes.
