Being a hugely saturated market, especially for models and aspiring influencers, it can be almost impossible to stand out among the crowd; however, Olyria Roy has managed to create a successful career and a multi-million person following by embracing her entrepreneurial mindset and extensive business knowledge.
Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia during a time of national conflict, Olyria quickly learned how to overcome challenges and be self-motivated. Her mother, who was one of the first female business owners in St. Petersburg after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, is one of Olyria’s greatest role models. Having learned the value of business and education from an early age, Olyria eventually pursued two Master’s degrees in international relations and political science, which led her to secure an internship with the United Nations in New York City.
Instead of going on to partake in a conventional business career, Olyria used what she had learned in school and in her previous work experience to create her own brand identity and business as a model on social media. When starting out, Olyria simply hired a photographer and began sharing the finalized images to her Instagram account. She became an overnight social media sensation and has since then secured a little over 2.6 million followers on Instagram alone.
Now, she continues to create photos, videos, and original music, and she consults with other women who are looking to build a brand of their own. Her goal is to inspire other women to believe in themselves and show them that they can achieve success through hard work and dedication just like she did. Although Olyria has been fortunate enough to experience immense success, she has faced a plethora of challenges along the way. The primary obstacle for her has been surrounding her body type, and the stigmas associated with sporting a “curvier” figure in the modeling industry.
“Despite the increasing acceptance of all things curvy, actually being voluptuous in the modeling world still carries with it a bit of stigma,” says Olyria. “Producers still believe that people do not want to see a non-skinny body on the screen, but this is their loss. This gives us curvy women the opportunity to monetize ourselves better to a select audience. People are passionate and eager to see us, to know more about us, and we have a number of tremendous opportunities to earn our own incomes and to keep those earnings for ourselves.”
It’s clear that Olyria has never allowed hurtful comments or the unrealistic beauty standards of society stop her from achieving her goals. She urges people to remember that even the most successful people are still just people, and they have fears, they have doubts, and they have worries just like everyone else. The only difference is, successful people don’t let these challenges stop them from accomplishing what they set out to do. Olyria’s advice to anyone pursuing a business or personal goal is to not let destructive thoughts about what could go wrong act as impediments to your success.
